The need for individuals who have completed master’s in social work degree programs in California is growing. According to the California Health Care Almanac, nearly one in six California adults has a mental health need. In addition, nearly one in 20 suffers from a mental illness so severe their quality of life is affected. It is not always adults who must deal with mental health conditions in California. One in 13 children also suffer from mental illness, which is why there is a growing need for social workers in the state.
In 2016, there were over 30,000 child, family and school social workers as well as more than 14,000 healthcare social workers in California, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Almost 13,000 social workers worked in the mental health and substance abuse industry while almost 11,000 more worked in a variety of industries. Salaries for all social workers in the state averaged between $54,290 per year to $71,080 per year.
Throughout the United States, social worker positions are expected to grow by 12 percent over the next decade. Actual expected growth varies by the type of social work practiced, with healthcare social workers expected to grow by 19 percent while child, family and school social worker positions are expected to grow by six percent. Child and family social workers are growing in importance as parents seek better parenting skills and states attempt to eliminate abuse and neglect of children. Schools are seeing a growing need for social work as enrollment grows. There has been a demonstrated need for social workers in schools as they are better able to manage children with severe emotional and mental issues than guidance counselors.
Positions in the healthcare field are expected to grow in order to manage an aging population and to help families adjust to new treatments, medications and lifestyles that are being created as a result of the Affordable Care Act and the American Health Care Act.

Online & Off-Campus Programs
Designed as a collaboration between the Department of Social Work and The Tseng College, the Master of Social Work program is offered online as a two-year, full-time program and off-campus, as a part-time, three-year program. Off-campus locations vary each admissions cycle. The online program is an asynchronous program which means that students do not have to be online at specific times for classes. However, students are required to attend a weekly, one-hour synchronous online field education class. Students take two eight-week courses at a time plus an ongoing 16-week field education class. Students are not required to visit the California State Northridge campus during their studies. Students must be available for field placement Monday through Friday from 9 AM until 6 PM as there are no evening or weekend placements available. Students may not complete their field internship at their own place of employment.
The Off-Campus program requires students to attend year-round. Classes are taught three at a time in 16-week semesters. Classes are held on Wednesdays or Thursdays from 4 to 10 PM and include up to four additional Saturday courses during the summer. Students must be available for field placement Monday through Friday from 9 AM until 6 PM as there are no evening or weekend placements available. As with the online program, students cannot complete a field internship at their place of employment. Classes are offered at either the College of the Canyons or Ventura County Government Center.
